Friday UFO Blogging

Earlier tonight, I was taking my newly-downloaded Google Earth 5.0 on a test spin so I zoomed in on my old neighborhood and went to the street view. This is the west end of Cadillac Circle in Tampa, Florida and this picture was taken some time in April 2011. The highway going from left to right is 78th Street. Now, see the red and yellow house on the right? That's where I grew up between 1965-9. Then I noticed something in the sky that didn't belong. If you don't see it right away, then click on the image for the much higher resolution version and I guarantee you'll see it then.
I rotated the mouse wheel one click forward and backward and this UFO that was flying almost directly over my old house is not there. I would think that if this was a jet (and the lenticular shape doesn't make it look like a jet), the second or two it would've taken the Google people to snap those three still frames would keep in frame something as slow moving as a jet flying 30,000 or 35,000 feet overhead. Yet it wasn't in view no matter how widely I panned one way or the other.
I went back in time, so to speak, to the moment when the Google car turned off 78th Street onto Cadillac Circle. I panned to the left, which is south, and could see no evidence of this anomaly. Likewise when I panned north. It was captured only in this split second the camera was trained behind the car to 78th Street and at no other time.

Now, I'm not a photographer by any means. Maybe shutterbug Stan Banos can help me out here. But I've seen enough lens artifacts to know what's what and this is obviously not a water droplet or lens flare or dust or bird shit or a break in the clouds or anything like that and if it was any of those things, they'd be reproduced. I would think, judging by the clarity of the pictures, that Google uses state-of-the-art high-speed, high-resolution digital cameras that aren't readily susceptible to artifacts. I'm not saying this is an alien spacecraft flying almost directly over my childhood home. What I am saying is that this is a UFO because I cannot identify it and it is most definitely in flight. And don't forget: We were in Tampa in the 60's because the old man was stationed at MacDill AFB and military bases, particularly Air Force bases, attract a lot of UFO activity.
By the way, in case you're curious, this is far from the only UFO that's been captured on Google cameras.

Huh. Looks kinda like an F-14 with the wings folded back.

Well, the wings of an F-14 don't fold back. This does not look even remotely like anything in our declared military arsenal. And it's certainly not a commercial jetliner, either. It was literally a case where it was there one second and gone the very next. And I did an exhaustive search of that particular area in Tampa during that brief window in time and it appears nowhere else in the stills. So whatever it was was traveling very fast. And UFO activity was seen Tampa during April/May of 2011.

It looks like a seal. Or, Rush "Lard Boy" Limbaugh, tarred and feathered and shot out of a cannon by the Ringling Bros. Circus.

Okay. Maybe not.

Yes, the F-14 Tomcat's wings DO fold back. And I'm comparing the one in your post to this one:

Yeah, I see what you mean (Maybe I was thinking of the F-16 or F-18). But the ass end in the anomaly I picked up is way too big. Plus, it doesn't explain how even a fast-moving fighter jet flying relatively low could be there literally one second and gone the next without a trace.

A couple of things. It is possible - possible - that it is a fighter jet. If it were, based on possible orientations and scale, the altitude appears to be under 1000 ft. A fighter flying at 600 - 700 knots at that altitude could be "here one second gone the next" depending on the camera's frame rate and orientation. Did you look at the360 degree views a step forward and back from from that spot? A lot of times on roads without a discernible left side/right side (private roads in a trailer park like this, for example) people don't realize the view they are looking at is the back of the car as it moves, so their next step forward in the program is actually backwards from the car's original movement. That being said, the F-14, that it kinda sorta looks like, has been retired and is no longer flown by the military. The only fast movers in the inventory are the F-15, F-16, F-18 and F-22, none of which seems to match the geometry of the the UFO. And you probably still should have seen it in another image.

Here's what it likely is, disappointing as this may seem: a pigeon. Bear with me here. The images on google earth are processed to emphasize contrast in order to bring out detail (note the clear halo around the object in your closeup - dead giveaway that the image has been "sharpened" in photoshop terms) This gives an angularity and crispness to an small object that is in motion and would otherwise have blurry edges. If it is a pigeon or other bird swooping down (in the general direction of the stop sign?) it can move very far and fast it the time between exposures - certainly out of the sky. Look on the ground or in the tree to see if you notice a bird in that area.

First off, I didn't live in "a trailer park." Those are modular homes built on tracts that are common in Florida.

Secondly, those possibilities are certainly valid ones. As I'd said, I panned north and south looking for evidence of this anomaly, even going back in time a few seconds to when the car turned off 78th Street and got on Cadillac Circle. There's also the possibility that the bird, jet or whatever it was could've been behind the trees to the right of the end of the street so I couldn't have seen it. But panning one way or the other one or two seconds forward or back in time turns up nothing. And to me, either end of this flying object (and I have no idea which is which since I don't know which direction it was flying) looks too tapered to be a fighter jet such as the F-14 that Mithras thinks it is. A jet flying close to ground level at several hundreds of miles an hour could be there one second and gone the next but finding no evidence of it while panning north and south at the intersection doesn't mean it is a jet, especially as the shape doesn't jibe with that of a conventional fighter jet.
